Why you can trust SCMP

There was a time when 1 terabyte of storage required high-end multi-disk arrays that cost thousands of dollars and IT experts to set up on your network. That is no longer the case with the introduction of external drives that now offer you the same storage capacity - equal to 1,000 gigabytes - as well as the ability to plug directly into your PC.

One such drive comes from Seagate, whose FreeAgent Desk 1TB drive puts enough storage memory to let you do what the company terms: 'Back up everything that matters.'

So how much storage is 1 terabyte? Well, if you take the normal storage capacity of 700MB per CD, then it would equal 1,498 CDs you can put inside one of these drives.

To help you better store and protect your data, the FreeAgent Desk 1TB now comes with automatic backup software for your PC, as well as software encryption for keeping your files from unwanted eyes.

In designing the FreeAgent, Seagate also recognises that such drives don't need to be active all the time, so they put a smart utility inside the drive to put the device into sleep mode once it has been idle for 15 minutes.
