Director Ann Hui On-wah is the first Hongkonger and woman to take the top honour in the Fukuoka Prize since it was set up in 1990. The 61-year-old was named the grand prize winner in recognition of her contribution to Asian culture. Born in Anshan , Liaoning , Hui is one of the city's most socially conscious directors, tackling issues from Vietnamese boatpeople to Alzheimer's disease. A ceremony will be held in Fukuoka on September 14.
