There is nothing particularly special about the Nokia 3110 Evolve as a phone, but as a symbol of the growing concerns about our planet, it stands out like a beacon in the darkness.

There are no breakthroughs in terms of mobile technology with the 3110 Evolve. What you do get is one of the first mass-market phones specifically designed with features that help reduce energy consumption - so we save on carbon emissions, and promote reusable materials - to better manage the finite resources of our planet.

One of the key components of its 'greenness' is the flat, grey shell covering its side and back, which is made up of organic, unpainted material that can be broken down and reused in future handsets.

The Evolve 3110 also comes with an energy-efficient charger that will not continue to draw electricity when the phone is not attached to it. According to Nokia, if everyone unplugged their cellphone chargers after use, the amount of electricity that would be saved could power some 100,000 homes.

The packaging for the 3110 Evolve is also made up of 60 per cent recycled material.

But apart from its eco-friendliness, the Evolve 3110 is a bit of a disappointment. It has only tri-band GSM with no 3G, comes with a below-average 1.3-megapixel camera, and only has very standard features such a music player and browser.
