Customers of a popular watering hole have accused the Discovery Bay management of ignoring residents' wishes after a protest action failed to stop eviction procedures.

About 200 people demonstrated outside the Beer Bay in Discovery Bay Plaza last Sunday waving placards and wearing 'Save the Beer Bay' T-shirts to protest against the non-renewal of its lease from September 14.

But Discovery Bay Commercial Services, which manages the Plaza, wrote to Beer Bay manager Alister Hill on Monday reminding him of the expiry of its lease and procedures for vacating the building.

'About 200 people attended the protest. We have well over 8,000 hits on the forum about the closure and we have more than 2,000 signatures on the petition,' Mr Hill said.

'They have the legal right to terminate the lease but we believe it is unreasonable considering the level of support from residents.'

Michael Prothero, a general manager who lives in Discovery Bay Road, said: 'Despite the fact that we have had the protest, the petition and the e-mails, it seems to have had no effect on Hong Kong Resorts. They seem to be riding roughshod over the wishes of the people who have made DB a success for them.
