Disgraced dentist Cecilia Young Yau-yau claims to have spent one day a week since she graduated in 1994 in the University of Hong Kong library studying her profession. She also claims to have written 200 articles on dentistry.

But despite her extra studies, she was found guilty yesterday of three counts of misconduct and described as 'disgraceful and dishonourable' by the Dental Council after her botched attempt to apply braces to the teeth of Dragon Air flight attendant Wong Yuen-mei.

Ms Wong had told the disciplinary inquiry she walked into Dr Young's surgery in August 2004 and was told that in six months her teeth would be fixed.

On that understanding, the airline worker allowed her to start treatment that she hoped would improve her looks and confidence.

But almost one year later she had spent HK$24,000 and her teeth looked worse.

The council yesterday criticised the dentist for lying to her patient about the time required for treatment, failing to understand the basic biomechanics of the procedure and not rectifying the situation by referring the flight attendant to a specialist.

Based on expert evidence given during the inquiry, Dr Young was also accused of inventing a treatment plan for her patient to try to escape punishment.
