Professor defends record but makes no comment on private-patient fees controversy

Former University of Hong Kong medical dean Lam Shiu-kum, who resigned early this month just as the controversy broke over the billing of private patients at its hospital facilities, spoke out yesterday.

In a statement released by his lawyers, Professor Lam defended his record and contributions to the medical profession, but did not comment on the controversy, which is being investigated by a committee of inquiry set up by the university, and an outside law-enforcing authority.

'I have served the medical profession and public at large in Hong Kong for 40 years - with a firm commitment to help those in need, with passion and dedication,' he said.

'I am also aware of reports surrounding ongoing inquiries regarding the system and methodology for billing of private services rendered by the university,' he added. 'It is apparent that the private practicing rights of clinical teachers under the present regime are matters that should be reviewed.'

It would be 'inappropriate and improper' to make 'any comments about the same at this stage', he added.

Professor Lam will also retire from the Hospital Authority board after serving six years. A spokeswoman of the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau said his term would not be renewed because it was usual not to reappoint a board member after six years.
