In Chinese culture, gold has been given for generations to celebrate births, while it's popular to give jewellery as christening gifts in western cultures.
'Pure gold is perceived as a keepsake in Chinese culture and is given as a memento to commemorate newborns and/or their birthdays,' says William Hui, group brand manager of Just Gold and Just Diamonds. 'I don't think parents would let their newborns or children wear these pieces immediately. It's very much part of the gift-giving culture and more about the meaning behind it.'
There are many choices when it comes to jewellery for newborns and children. In terms of styles, experts say pendants and charms are the most popular.
'Quality charms in gold make good investments because they're long-lasting. They can be worn as part of a bracelet or as a pendant,' says one mother of two young daughters. Brands such as Cartier and Tiffany & Co have charms in both classic and whimsical designs.
'Pendants can be worn with a fine gold chain or leather cords. Children's designs usually feature decorative and cute motifs,' says Hui.
Emily Li, brand general manager of Chow Sang Sang, suggests ear studs with dainty designs for little girls with their ears pierced. 'Make sure your daughter feels comfortable wearing the piece,' says Li.
