Zhejiang customs officials have rejected a European shipment of clothes from luxury fashion house Versace, saying the batch had obvious quality problems, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The Zhejiang Bureau of Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine said 473 Versace items made in Italy and Greece and exported to Wenzhou had various problems, including fading, dye cracks and dye bleeding.

They included men's and women's wear and knitted clothing, the report said.

A Wenzhou customs official said the mainland should improve inspections of textile imports to avoid any problems.

'Under current customs regulations there are no rules enforcing inspections of medium- or high-priced foreign brand clothing,' he said.

'We may need to have a rethink to tighten inspection or quarantine regulations in this area, but it will take a very long time to realise.

'So customers should be careful when shopping for such products. Big brand products do not always represent high quality.'
