I heard that Californian punk band NOFX were coming to town, which brought back memories of when I was a pimply teenager riding dirt bikes in Arizona.
This was one live show that would probably never happen in Hong Kong again. And I'd never been to the venue, the Caritas Community Centre. That alone was enough to entice me to go - a punk gig in a Catholic Church community centre.
After a few drinks in the car park (just like when we were 14), we went in for the show. The thought had crossed my mind to run amok inside the church - but, having been raised a Catholic, I could see myself being struck down by lightning.
Local hardcore outfit King Ly Chee were the warm-up act and they were impressive. I didn't realise they had such a following of prepubescent death-metal lovers. This was another side of Hong Kong I hadn't experienced. A girl from the audience jumped on stage and screamed her lungs out, full of the same teenage angst I felt when I was 14.
When NOFX came on, they started with my favourite song, Linoleum, and I was taken back to my days of moshing at the Lollapalooza festival. But it just wasn't the same this time around, being 25 years old, and I felt like puking and fainting all at once.
