Korn were the baddies who gave kids back their nasty role models  after the PC era that was grunge rock.

Rather than hubris about artistic identity, they sang/rapped adolescent odes to the frustrated, male-centric view of sex,  sprinkled with stories of singer Jonathan Davis' tormented childhood and allusions to episodes  of sexual abuse.

For their efforts, they were dubbed 'nu-metal'. And it worked. By the  end of the 1990s they'd sold millions  of albums and inspired a   flash of  shallow imitators.

But underneath their perfect tabloid-seeking sensibilities - surrounding themselves with porn stars and once claiming that Hitler was in heaven - Korn were one of the most inspired and ground-breaking outfits of what's a tired genre these days.

After a couple of dud releases,  this set  is a surprisingly slick aural assault that offers relief, especially if you're weary of the countless skinny necktie-wearing New Wavers  clogging the shelves.

You have to respect the band's ability to reinvent. They see no shame employing producers the Matrix and Atticus Ross - the former best known for his work with the manufactured angst pop-rock  of sk8er  girl Avril Lavigne - to polish their sludgy dirge rock back to form.

Although some of the depths of Davis' darkest places are missing  from the lyrics - life's probably pretty peachy these days -  these 14 tracks represent a successful crop after three fallow years.

Surprisingly, they save the best  for last, with Tearjerker, while 10 or a 2-Way, as the name suggests, is a smutty reminder of how naughty boys can be when they put their minds to it.
