Sliver: The Best of the Box is an album best left to Nirvana fanatics. Comprised of demos and crude live recordings of the grunge band in their early days, it's largely a collection of unfinished tracks that are neither enjoyable nor of great musical significance.
The CD opens with a version of Spank Thru from the demo tape Fecal Matter, followed by a 1987 live recording of Heartbreaker. These tracks lack finesse and will likely depress, rather than delight, fans of the innovative and pioneering band. Other songs include a home recording of Sliver and solo acoustic radio sessions of Lithium and Opinion by frontman Kurt Cobain.
The sound quality of the tracks is so bad that it seems strange to expose such raw recordings of a band that would normally spend hours in the studio to refine their work. Diehard Nirvana fans will be better off saving their money to buy the band's studio albums.
