Filmmaker Wong Jing is proud to say he gives audiences what they want, not what  they need, and his success looks set to make him a winner at the 20th UA awards

A director famous for using crude toilet humour and excessive sex and violence is being hailed by the film industry as the most successful moviemaker in Hong Kong.

Film critics and directors believe Wong Jing, whose famous works include Naked Weapon, Raped by an Angel and the God of Gamblers series, probably made more money in the past 20 years than any other filmmaker in the city.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's UA 20th Anniversary Celebration & Hong Kong Top Blockbuster Awards, director Takkie Yeung Yat-tak said: 'He directed more films than anyone and most of them did well.

'He started in the 1980s when the economy was good. But most of all, he has a good idea of what the audience wants.'

Wong, 49, is famous for making what he refers to as 'films people want to watch rather than films that people should watch'.

'I don't make films to please critics. I want the audience to be happy and for Hong Kong films to make money,' he once said.

Wong created the 'modern gambling movie' when he directed God of Gamblers, updated the 'heroic bloodshed' crime movie when he produced Young and Dangerous, and perfected the erotic thriller with Naked Weapon.

Film critic Stephen Lam Hon-fun   said that  of all the awards to be presented tomorrow - including the top 10 box-office films, the top-10-grossing male and female actors, and the highest-grossing director from 1985 to 2005 - he was only sure that Wong would win.

'Hey, we are not talking about quality. Wong definitely wins when it comes to box-office takings. Just look at the sheer volume of films he has made.'

Regarded as a hack or pornographer by his peers and critics - Tsui Kark referred to his films as 'cheap, fast, but no good' - Wong has written 95 films, produced 92, directed 87 and starred in 55 since 1981, when he directed his first movie, Challenge of the Gamesters.

The only contenders against Wong are Election director Johnny To Kei-fung  and Infernal Affairs director Andrew Lau Wai-keung.

Battling for the spot of the top-grossing actor  are Andy Lau Tak-wah  -  who has made 108 films in 20 years - Stephen Chow Sing-chi,  Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat.

As for actresses, the  frontrunners are the late Anita Mui Yim-fong,  Maggie Cheung Man-yuk,  Rosamund Kwan Chi-lam,  Carina Lau Ka-ling  and Sandra Ng Kwan-yu.

The top 10 films were announced  last week. Stephen Chow's  Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer took first and second place, with $61 million and $60 million respectively.
