Langham's gingerbread man mans ovens for a record loaf
Langham Place Hotel's executive chef Jurgen Bemmerl (below) is going to be very busy today. He and a team of 20 chefs will attempt to bake the world's longest gingerbread at 23.6 metres long. 'I am very excited about it. It's going to be very challenging,' said Bemmerl, who came up with the seasonal idea. 'Being a native German, I used to bake traditional gingerbread of eight to nine centimetres in length.'
However, this enormous loaf will require a bit more effort. The result will be displayed tomorrow on the footbridge linking the hotel to the Langham Place mall in Mongkok. It will be the same length as the footbridge. Bemmerl will be using four 2-metre-long ovens to make about 40 smaller breads that will be glazed together under a layer of chocolate. 'I am fond of the footbridge idea. It's the bridge between the hotel and the community.' After entering the Guinness World Records, the big bread will be cut up and sold in tasty slices at $20 a piece.
