A new wave of concern over intimidation of the media swept Hong Kong yesterday after a bomb delivered to a leading daily newspaper in a gift-wrapped parcel blew up and injured a woman.

The small bomb, addressed to the chief editor of Ming Pao, exploded as it was being opened by his secretary, causing her minor facial injuries.

A letter delivered with it, along with a bouquet, denounced executives of the newspaper as 'a bunch of scumbags' for an unspecified action in October, and demanded a $30 million donation to the Community Chest within three days.

The letter threatened 'far more severe' attacks if the paper did 'this sort of thing' again. It did not state what had given offence, saying 'you know what you did very well'.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen led the condemnation last night, saying: 'I will not tolerate such acts and will follow up on the case.'
