The Lok Ma Chau checkpoint will be closed for at least half an hour on Sunday, to enable several buildings just across the border to be destroyed with explosives.

Shenzhen's redevelopment plans call for the 18 private buildings at Yunongcun in the Huanggang area - a stone's throw away from the checkpoint - to be demolished in the blasts.

The Hong Kong government expects there will be severe traffic congestion around the checkpoint on Sunday afternoon. The detonations are scheduled for 1pm, and cross-border traffic in both directions - including the franchised Yellow Bus service running between Lok Ma Chau and Huanggang - will be suspended due to the blasts.

Northbound traffic to Shenzhen will be suspended from 12.35pm, with southbound traffic heading to Hong Kong halting 10 minutes later. The Yellow Bus service will stop at noon. Traffic is expected to resume no earlier than 1.10pm. The Transport Department estimates about 5,000 travellers and 500 vehicles will be affected.

Assistant commissioner for transport Stephen Ip Man-kwong has urged the public to stay away from the Lok Ma Chau checkpoint during the affected period.

A bus service will transfer travellers from Lok Ma Chau to Sheung Shui, where they can take the KCR and cross the border at the unaffected Lowu checkpoint.
