Large companies that spend tens of millions of dollars on IT have large numbers of people to handle every aspect of that investment. And the chief technology or information officer spends a great deal of time working out the best way to spend that money.
But small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) often cannot even afford an IT manager, let alone a team of IT experts.
SIB Infotech is a small company that specialises in helping other SMEs with their IT needs.
The director, Frederick Lau, believes it is possible to help these businesses, but he said it took a great deal of patience and it was necessary to do a little teaching as well as show that you really understood their needs.
'They don't see the value of the investment,' he said. Often these companies are seeking quick fixes.
'They want a coffee-maker solution: you put coffee in here, press this button, and it's done. Perfect coffee! At least, that is what they think. In reality, of course, things are far more difficult,' he said.
