Christians warn over Church of Zion sect
The group allegedly promotes hydrogen peroxide as a cure and enlists teenagers
Almost 40 mainstream Christian churches have urged followers of the controversial Church of Zion to stop drinking hydrogen peroxide, while urging the public to be aware of the differences between conventional religions and radical sects.
The churches' call came after it emerged that the sect now had a membership of 2,000, including teenagers, mostly recruited in Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai.
While the Church of Zion insists that it has not given drinks containing chemicals to its members, its followers are said to have been encouraged to drink hydrogen peroxide to strengthen their health.
In a joint statement issued yesterday, 21 Christian churches in Tin Shui Wai and 17 in Yuen Long expressed their concerns over the sect, saying it breached the orthodox understanding of the Bible.
'Radical sects are particularly alarming as they ... turn to mind control to encourage members to refuse exchanges and interaction with other people,' said Wu Chi-wai, executive director of the Hong Kong Church Renewal Movement.
