Bionicle: Mask of Light
(Lego/Miramax VCD $50)
It's the way of the modern marketing world for a toy to follow film or television success. Think Disney, think Teletubbies, think Tweenies.
But it's not so normal for the process to occur in reverse. Barbie did it recently with a trio of films. But it took her about 40 years as a best-selling toy before she dared to make the shift into movies.
Toymaker Lego and Miramax are hoping for similar success with Bionicle: The Mask Of Light, an animated adventure that breathes life into Lego's award-winning Bionicle action figures.
I have to confess, I had no idea about the world of Bionicle until this film came along (my boys are too young), so I sat down blissfully ignorant that the video games, comics and action figures had come before. It wasn't surprising, therefore, that, despite an introduction - of the type usually reserved for sci-fi films - it was difficult to shake off the feeling that I'd walked in halfway through this movie.
