Even the top A-level student was worried she wouldn't make the grade

Tales of pressure and anxiety abounded yesterday when 36,660 A-level students received their year-end results.

Jacqueline Sitt Ching-man from St Paul's Co-educational College scored the top marks of the group - A grades in three A-level and three AS-level (advanced supplementary) subjects. Ms Sitt said her good results were a big relief, as she had been worried that there would be no room for her at the University of Hong Kong medical faculty.

Half of the places at the university have already been snapped up by sixth-formers recruited under the Early Admission Scheme, introduced last year to allow outstanding students into university early.

Ms Sitt said she had turned down the opportunity of starting university under the scheme last year, partly because she wanted the challenge of sitting the tough A-level exams.

'Studying is also a group experience. I want to study medicine at the University of Hong Kong with my friends and form a study group with them,' she said.
