m.a.x. concepts

The m.a.x. concepts group will be offering 30 per cent discounts on menus at some of its restaurants over Mother's Day weekend. Cafe Landmark (2526 4200) is a great location if you want to squeeze in a spot of Mother's Day shopping.

The lunchtime menu costs HK$270. For a casual dining experience with tables large enough to seat an extended family, head to Eating Plus (2868 0599). Set lunch and dinner on May 11 costs HK$110 a person and dishes include tofu green salad and spicy minute steak with turmeric rice. Miso (2845 8773), Kiku (2521 3344) and Little Basil (2796 7818, 2396 6569) are the group's other participating restaurants.

All kitchen and operation staff are wearing gloves and masks. Sanitising handtowels are offered to dine-in guests, and it is mandatory for all staff to wash their hands every hour.

Island and Kowloon Shangri-La Hotels

Mothers who dine at any Island Shangri-La restaurant on Mother's Day will be given a gift.

Summer Palace (2820 8552) and cafe TOO (2820 8257) will accommodate large family gatherings. For lunch, Summer Cafe will offer dim sum and two nine-course dinners for four people, one for HK$2,180 and the other for HK$2,780.

At Kowloon Shangri-La traditional Chinese foods will be available from two menus at Shang Palace (2733 8754).

A table of six will pay HK$1,380 for lunch, and a table of 10 to 12 will pay HK$2,680. At Napa (2733 8752), a three-course Californian semi-buffet lunch costs HK$218 for adults and HK$140 for children. A five-course set dinner menu costs HK$480. A carnation will be given to mothers at all of the above sittings.

The hotels has a long list of precautionary measures in place, including providing hotel guests, diners and staff with face masks, installing sneeze guards at all buffet tables and providing all suppliers, vendors and contract workers with masks before they enter the premises.

At Island Shangri-La non-rinse hand sanitisers have been installed for guests, while masked and gloved staff at cafe TOO are serving customers.

Jimmy's Kitchen

Jimmy's Kitchen, in Central (2526 5293), offers a choice of three starters, four main courses and two puddings for Mother's Day lunch.

A two-course meal will set you back HK$288, three courses will cost HK$320.

All staff are wearing masks and gloves, and tables are set only after customers have ordered.

Grand Hyatt

Family-style lunch and dinner menus will be available at Grissini and Grand Cafe.

At the latter, a feast awaits the whole family with a selection of cold and hot platters that run the gamut from smoked salmon, salads and sushi to lobster and steak. Lunch and dinner costs HK$350 for adults and HK$245 for children, plus service.

Among its precautions, the air in the hotel's public areas is sprayed regularly with an anti-bacterial cleaning agent, front and back staff are wearing masks and kitchen staff are wearing gloves. Buffets have temporarily been replaced with family-style set menus.

The Royal Garden

Mothers dining at any of The Royal Garden hotel's restaurants on Mother's Day will receive a cash coupon worth HK$100 valid at its

bars and restaurants, and room packages. Options for the day include brunch at The Greenery (2733 2030), dim sum at the Garden Rooms (2733 2008) and dinner at The Balcony (2733 2033). Please call the hotel or restaurants for prices.

Marco Polo Hotels

At The Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel (2113 3912), opt for a lunch or dinner buffet at Cafe Marco and get a free drink, food dish or slice of cake.

The Coffee Mill (2113 7926) at The Marco Polo Gateway is serving international lunch and seafood dinner buffets with a photograph of the occasion and a gift for every mother. The Tavern at The Marco Polo Prince (2113 6050) will host a 'greatest moms' night. Guests can enjoy a four-course dinner and send messages to mothers via a giant screen.

If you want to avoid the crowds on Mother's Day, pop in at any of the hotels for lunch or afternoon tea the day before and receive a 30 per cent discount.

A selection of health juices and herbal soups are available at bars and restaurants.

Precautionary measures include covering buffets, cleaning table tops and food areas regularly with disinfectant and hotel staff wear masks.

Lan Kwai Fong

Drop in at any participating Lan Kwai Fong restaurant for a spot of food and mums get to eat free.

California Restaurant will serve up a three-course menu for HK$225, or early birds can opt for a cheap brunch of French toast or pancakes for HK$88. Across the way at Baci, a four-course lunch will set you back HK$318.

At Bamboo, put down HK$268 and tuck into an eight-course meal. Other participating restaurants are Indochine, Thai Lemongrass, Kyoto Joe and Tokio Joe.

All front and back staff are wearing masks, extra cleaning staff are on duty to clean public areas every half hour, and handtowels come in sealed plastic bags.

Great Eagle Hotel

Oysters in The Lobby Lounge (2375 1133, ext 2229) for HK$10? Yes, for a miminum purchase of six, until May 15, inclusive of Mother's Day.

An offer of two for the price of three for either a glass (HK$79) or bottle (HK$398) of Taittinger champagne will also run in The Lobby Lounge. At T'ang Court (2375 1133, ext 2250), enjoy Cantonese cuisine with a complimentary glass of Moet & Chandon for HK$680.

Measures in place include hourly disinfection of fittings and fixtures in the hotel. Staff are required to wear masks and gloves.

The Repulse Bay

Thanks to its location and open windows, The Verandah (2812 2722) guarantees fresh air.

Either a plated brunch or full brunch buffet will be available on Mother's Day at the cost of HK$358 for adults and HK$250 for children, including a glass of champagne or fruit punch.

At Spices (2812 2711), a la carte or buffet lunches and dinners will be available. The hotel hopes to have Perspex covers available in time for Mother's Day. If they are not, the hotel will serve plated buffets or a la carte.
