The big, menacing troll in the fantasy flick The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers would look even scarier were it not for the censor. Special effects workers originally designed the troll to be naked, but it was ruled too well-endowed for family viewing. Designers then suggested strapping an orc around the troll as a loin cloth.
The creature eventually wound up tastefully attired in a jumbo g-string. Even so, cover your eyes and rig up a firewall because the Internet hosts a notoriously obnoxious equivalent going by the same name.
In cyberspace, a troll is somebody hooked on sowing discord all over the Internet. He tries to start arguments and upset others through 'trolling', which conventionally means 'baiting' or 'fishing'. An Internet troll fishes for people's confidence and, once obtained, exploits it for the power trip.
These devious megalomaniacs often hang out in chatrooms. In a typical scenario, the troll announces that he has something special for whoever he targets. The prospect's interest piqued, he now sets the trap by announcing the nature of the bait.
Troll: 'I've got 300 bucks I must give away by tomorrow for a reality TV programme I'm starring in. Can you tell me your e-mail address so I can send it to you by Paypal, please?'
Troll: 'Lol [laughing out loud]. YHBT! [you have been trolled].'
