EACH year, Hong Kong's hot and humid weather brings with it a variety of itchy and uncomfortable skin irritations.

Complaints include fungal infections, boils, rashes, and bacterial infections, and the territory's doctors, chiropodists and dermatologists see thousands of cases annually. But the diseases are preventable and can often be treated at home unless a bacterial infection develops requiring antibiotic treatment.

Heat rash is a common and easily treated problem. Dermatologist Dr Samuel Leung says the rash develops when sweat glands are blocked and moisture is trapped, resulting in small, painful and itchy pimples.

''Heat rash can be prevented if sufferers can identify the tingling sensation and itchiness that comes before a rash develops. Good air conditioning is very important to keep skin cool, and washing off the area with lots of water also helps.

''An over-the-counter topical medicine like calamine lotion should be applied because it will soothe and cool the rash, and it contains very small particles which make it absorbent.

''If the condition develops to inflammation, topical calamine alone will not be enough, and topical antibiotic or antiseptic cream on prescription will be needed,'' he said.
