Beyond Titanic
Pearl, 8.30pm
This two-part programme examines the Titanic myth as it has evolved through numerous incarnations over the course of the 20th century. Part one traces the history of the ship, from its construction in Belfast to the fateful collision with the iceberg. The voyage is examined in detail, including the difficulties the crew found in working on such a vast vessel - it took one of the head crewmen 14 days prior to sailing to familiarise himself with the layout.
Historians cover the mistakes made by everyone involved and the survivors share tales of heroism. Part two, to be broadcast tomorrow, covers the aftermath, including the official inquiry into the tragedy and the changes made in ocean travel as a result.
Gods And Demons: Crocodile
World, 8pm
A new series which examines the way different belief systems view man's few remaining predators: worshipping them as gods or fearing them as demons. In ancient Egypt, one of the most powerful divinities was Sobek, the crocodile god, and even today, for certain people in Mali and Chad, this reptile is sacred. This programme travels to Asia to discover the stories, legends and beliefs that surround these creatures.
