Supachai Panitchpakdi, incoming head of the World Trade Organisation, has voiced his support for Qatar hosting the group's ministerial meeting next month amid concern by some states about security at the venue.

The comments, made yesterday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Shanghai, came as speculation mounted that the key session might be switched to another country, probably Singapore.

The city-state has offered to be a 'spare tyre' for the WTO, which is seeking to launch a fresh round of global trade liberalisation talks.

The meeting is scheduled to run from November 9 to 13.

'My plea is for all of us to make sure that we go ahead,' Mr Supachai told an audience of business executives. 'I would say it is as safe a place as anywhere else. Security has been very, very tight.'

Separately, United States President George W. Bush mentioned the Qatari capital in his address yesterday, in contrast to the communique issued on Thursday by Apec trade and foreign ministers, which omitted to name the city.
