On May 21, the school bus in which our two children were travelling was involved in a serious accident with a stalled truck in the North Point exit lane on the Eastern Corridor.
The driver of the minibus was seriously injured as was the supervisor and some of the children. Seats were overturned on impact, and the miracle of it all is that no one was killed.
The issue here is that because there is no legislation requiring school-bus companies to provide seat belts, children are at risk every time they get on the bus. These buses are on a schedule and travel at speed.
The Government should move to make seat belts for children on school buses mandatory just as they have in taxis. To leave a decision like this up to the discretion of the bus companies is not only irresponsible, it is blatant negligence.
