The DAB's candidate for the Hong Kong Island by-election on December 10 handed in his nomination papers yesterday and revealed his campaign slogan - 'rooted in the community, stabilising Hong Kong'.

Christopher Chung Shu-kun, 43, whose Chinese name means 'tree root', is the first candidate to hand in papers and is banking on his district work for the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong to get elected.

His main rival is non-affiliated barrister Audrey Eu Yuet-mee SC, 47, who yesterday made her first door-to-door visits - in Wah Fu Estate, Aberdeen.

Also expected to join the race is non-affiliated Eastern district councillor Jennifer Chow Kit-bing, 45.

Mr Chung, who was fourth on the DAB's five-member Hong Kong Island list in last month's Legco election, said he hoped to get at least 100,000 votes this time. His 153 nominators included community leaders from various districts in the constituency.

Accompanying him to hand in his papers at Eastern Court in Sai Wan Ho were party colleagues, including chairman Tsang Yok-sing.
