LEE TENG-HUI may take a trip to Europe soon after he retires as Taiwan's head of state, his top aide said yesterday.
'He would need to rest for a while after his presidency expires on May 20,' said Liu Tai-ying, the former chairman of the Kuomintang Business Management Committee.
'At the earliest his overseas trip would happen in June, but no exact date has been fixed,' Mr Liu said.
He declined to go into details in case Beijing attempted to obstruct the trip, simply suggesting it would take Mr Lee to several places in Western Europe.
But Mr Liu said Japan was the country Mr Lee would most like to visit if there was no opposition from China. Mr Lee, an alumni of Japan's Kyoto Imperial University, has repeatedly voiced his desire to visit Japan.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said earlier this month China was 'firmly' opposed to any trip to Japan by Mr Lee.
