Linda McCartney's first husband, Joseph Melville See - who was possibly the subject of a famous Beatles song - has committed suicide at his home in the American state of Arizona.

See, a geologist and cultural anthropologist, married Linda Eastman in the 1960s. She later married Paul McCartney. His body was discovered on Sunday, with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, at his home in the foothills of the Tucson Mountains in southern Arizona.

See, 62, had been depressed over undisclosed personal problems. Friends believed that his suicide may have had something to do with the death of Linda, who died in April 1998 of cancer at the age of 56.

See, known as Mel to his friends, had a daughter, Heather, now 37, with Linda.

See's connection to the Beatles was the topic of repeated rumours throughout his life, with some speculating that he was the Jo Jo in the group's hit song, Get Back. The lyric is: 'Jo Jo left his home in Tucson, Arizona, for some California grass.' Friends said he laughed about the speculation.
