A fresh cholera scare erupted yesterday after it was confirmed a Sheung Shui woman had contracted the disease.

The latest incident pushed the number of cholera cases this year to 14, compared to four last year and six in 1995.

Health inspectors were trying to trace the source of infection and had visited the patient's home in Woodland Crest, Sheung Shui.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said yesterday inspectors were satisfied family members had no symptoms of cholera. Their home had been disinfected.

'The source of infection cannot be confirmed. The latest case is a local cholera case and there is no evidence of secondary spread,' said the spokesman.

The patient, 33, was said to be in satisfactory condition in Princess Margaret Hospital last night.
