Queen's College is leader of the pack in this year's Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) with four science students scoring 10 straight As.

  Cheung Wan-chung, Hui Sun-lam, Berton Lee Fan-cheung and Tam Chung-fai, all aged 17, repeated the college's success rating of 1995.

  Last year, two Queen's students scored 10 As.

  This year's winners paid tribute to their supportive families and polished study routines, while acknowledging the stress the exam imposed.

  Modest Chung-fai said the result was most unexpected and was adamant it did not mean he was a great student.

  He gained A(1)s in Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Studies, Economics, Principles of Accounts, and A(2)s in Additional Mathematics and Physics.

  Chung-fai attributed his success to hard work, a bit of luck and plenty of family support.

  'Although the existing examination system puts much pressure on us, there is no denying it drives us to improve,' he said.

  Wan-chung was grateful to his family, and his mother was the first to hear about his result.

  He scored A(1)s in Chinese Language, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Studies, Economics, and Principles of Accounts, and an A(2) in English Language.

  Wan-chung said he would undertake his matriculation year at Queens' College, but might head to the United States to further his studies.

 Another student who was pleasantly surprised by his results was Sun-lam.

  He gained A(1)s in English Language, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, and Computer Studies, and A(2)s in Chinese Language and Principles of Accounts. He said he had been working towards the HKCEE since Form Four. The keys to success were lots of study and exercise, Sun-lam, who is also considering studying abroad, said.

  Fan-cheung said even when he was in a foul mood his family's support never wavered. His attentiveness in lectures and work ethic paid off with A(1)s in Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Computer Studies, and Principles of Accounts, and an A(2) in Additional Mathematics.

  'My family always stood by me,' he said. 'When I was in bad mood, they would humour me, and when I was at the end of my tether they would encourage me.'
