Surreal Sommersby

Sommersby (Pearl, 9.30pm) is a beautifully filmed, directed and performed movie but there's something about the characters that is aloof and distant.

It doesn't spoil the film; in fact, it gives it an almost surreal quality, as if you are watching a story performed by spirits.

Filmed in Virginia, it's a romantic saga that transports you to another time and place.

Richard Gere returns to his home after six years imprisonment during the Civil War and his wife (Jodie Foster) can't believe he's the same man.

He looks the same, but his nature is fundamentally different.

A remake of the French movie The Return Of Martin Guerre, it is a moving love story with an ending that is satisfyingly un-Hollywood.
