STAFF at the Australian Consulate in Hongkong have fielded more than 100 inquiries a day during this week from expatriates asking how to register to vote for the March 13 election.

Hongkong represents Australia's third largest expatriate community with 18,000 nationals.

With the exception of people who have recently turned 18 years of age, the electoral roll is closed to overseas voters, and those who have not advised their local electoral office may find they are no longer enrolled to vote.

Australian citizens who have been living overseas for more than three years, and have not been granted an extension from the Australian Electoral Commission, are ineligible to vote.

Overseas electors can cast their ballots in person at the consulate-general, which is running a polling booth between 9 am and 5 pm at its Wan Chai offices on the 23rd floor of Harbour Centre, 25 Harbour Road.

From March 1, voters can cast pre-poll ballots at the consulate-general Monday to Friday from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm.
