One of BAN-PT's significant considerations is the university's internationalisation activities showcasing UMM as a "local university with an international touch".

UMM's internationalisation goals are divided into four phases: awareness creation adopted from 2004 to 2008, international exposure development carried out from 2009 to last year, obtaining international recognition starting this year until 2018, and achieving world-class university status by 2019.

One of UMM's international programmes is a collaboration with the Australian Consortium for "In-Country" Indonesian Studies. Students majoring in Indonesian studies from Australia, Britain and the United States are sent to Indonesia on field studies to complete their courses.

Another programme is a co-operation with the EU, commencing with the Asia Link programme in 2007. It has now progressed into the Erasmus Mundus programme. This arrangement is composed mainly of student and lecturer exchanges between UMM and European universities such as in Trento and Cagliari in Italy, Minho and Porto in Portugal, Kuopio in Finland, Innsbruck in Austria, Dresden in Germany, Murcia and Oviedo in Spain, La Rochelle in France, Lublin in Poland, and the University of Latvia.

UMM's collaboration with the US Peace Corps has also sparked the university's internationalisation objectives. The US Peace Corps has been tapping UMM to conduct its pre-service volunteer training programme in the country since 2010.

The university also develops summer courses for Indonesians and foreigners. Course durations stretch from a month to a year, including two-week programmes such as Explore East Java, Indonesia Homestay Programme and Learning Express in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic, among others.
