DEMOCRATIC Party vice-chairman Anthony Cheung Bing-leung and Wan Chai District Board member John Tse Wing-ling look virtually certain to be in the new Legislative Council in September.

The two beat five other party members to become candidates in the election committee poll, in which all district board members vote to elect 10 Legco members.

It is almost certain Mr Cheung and Mr Tse will be elected, because the party has 52 members as well as a number of allies in the 283-strong election committee.

A candidate requires 27 votes to win a seat in the council.

The election committee election which will be held in September is seen as a short cut for the second-liners in the political arena to enter the legislature.

The unsuccessful candidates in last night's poll of party members were Yuen Bun-keung, Cheung Yin-tung, Tsang Kin-shing, Tam King-wah and Lai Kwok-hung.
