A man of foreign nationality was stabbed to death yesterday in Beijing amid a rising tide of anti-foreigner sentiment.

The attack occurred at the entrance of Qudeng alleyway in Xicheng district, south of Tiananmen Square, at around 3pm.

Police officers near the scene arrested the unidentified suspect, security officials said.

Beijing is reviewing a bill that seeks to reduce the minimum duration of stay for foreigners working on the mainland to 90 days from 180.

Last month, about 100 Africans staged protests in Guangzhou, demanding the release of the body of a Nigerian man who died in police custody. On May 15, Beijing launched a 100-day crackdown on foreigners who sneaked into the mainland, overstayed their visas or were working illegally.

The crackdown came after a British tourist sexually assaulted a Chinese woman in an incident that was caught on camera and posted online.
