A new Huawei Mate V foldable phone might be on the way
- A Mate V trademark application might hint at an upcoming Huawei foldable phone that folds inward
- Huawei’s previous two foldables, the Mate X and Mate Xs, sold out in China despite their hefty price tags
Huawei has already launched two foldable phones in China, receiving mostly positive reception in the country. Now China’s largest smartphone brand might have a new foldable in the works. Huawei filed a trademark application this week to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for something called the Mate V.
It’s not clear from the EUIPO website exactly what the Mate V will be since the application remains under examination. There’s also little information that’s been made public. But many people are already speculating that this could be the new Huawei foldable phone that’s been rumoured for a while under the name Mate X2. These rumours based on what appear to be designs leaked in January say Huawei’s next foldable will feature an inward-folding display.
If true, this would be a departure from previous Huawei foldables. The Mate X and Mate Xs both fold outward, leaving the display exposed. Dutch technology website LetsGoDigital, which first spotted the Mate V trademark application, also made a render of what the Mate V could look like.
Last year’s Huawei Mate X reportedly sold out within seconds after it went on sale in China last November for 16,999 yuan (US$2,416). Then the same happened with the Mate Xs, an improved version of the Mate X that launched in March. Scalpers quickly scooped up the limited number of handsets and peddled them for twice the original price on e-commerce sites. Although the stock sold out quickly for both handsets, Huawei never said exactly how many units it made available.
