In China, it’s hard to find a person who doesn’t use WeChat.
It’s where friends, families and colleagues message each other, share photos and updates, and exchange contacts with new acquaintances. Simply put, it’s like WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook, and Slack combined -- and more!
Although tourists and visitors won’t be able to enjoy every function on WeChat, there are still plenty of ways you can try out WeChat while traveling in the country. In this installment of the China Tech Survival Guide, we show you exactly how.
BEFORE WE START
Here’s how to sign up for WeChat.
Download the app on either the iOS App Store or Google Play. Open the app and tap “Sign Up.” Register with your cell phone number and enter the SMS verification code when prompted.

ADD FRIENDS
Using WeChat can be a lonely experience if you don’t have any friends. So whether you’re in China for business or fun, feel free to ask any new acquaintances to add you on WeChat. It might sound creepy at first, but let me tell you: It’s a completely acceptable way to connect with people in China. There are three ways to do that:
