Tangled in the tariff net: US trade war threatens Chinese fishing town

In the southern Chinese city of Maoming, tilapia are more than just a food staple. The fish are a livelihood, source of income, and way of life for thousands of people. Sixteen factories dot the city, churning tilapia into fillets for export, much of it to supermarket freezers in the United States. But the ongoing US-China trade war has put operations in jeopardy. Round after round of tariffs have left China’s US$425 million in tilapia exports to the US facing duties of 170 per cent, effectively pricing them out of their largest export market.
