If you're under 30 you probably have no idea what Subbuteo is but, believe it or not, there was once a time when photo-realistic interactive simulations of football almost indistinguishable from real life, in which you can compete with anyone around the world through a magic 'interweb', did not exist.

Instead, we had little plastic men that you flicked with your finger.

It's a testament to the complete lack of alternatives available that Subbuteo had not just some success, but huge success. One man cashing in on the nostalgia is Terry Lee, who recreates iconic scenes from football by modifying and hand-painting Subbuteo men.

His work - Bobby Moore lifting the World Cup for England, Zinedine Zidane headbutting Marco Materazzi, etc - has featured in the Guardian, Daily Mail and many other places. He makes a living selling his creations online.

Now, Terry lives in Brazil - where better to conduct business - and AFP visited his studio, where he has been turning his talents to some of the key moments of this World Cup.

“I’ve always loved football. I’ve always had a passion for art but it never seemed to materialise into a career,” Lee, 31, told AFP. “I feel very blessed that I can combine two great passions of mine.”
