Best mountain running and climbing films free on YouTube from Touching The Void to Project Endless

  • There are countless top quality mountain sport films on YouTube, all for free, to inspire your next adventure
  • The films range in budget from famous films to homes and all are equally entertaining

Stuck for a film to watch and sick of scrolling endlessly? There is a never ending list of films on YouTube following athletes and adventurers in the mountains.

Here are just a few you can check out.

Touching The Void

This is an absolute classic mountaineering documentary, a bestselling book and now also a play. If it was made up, it would seem too far fetched to be entertaining. But it is true and that is what makes it so gripping.

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates venture into the Andes to scale an unclimbed face. But when Simpson gruesomely breaks his leg high in the mountain, all seems lost. Yates is left with a dilemma – try and save Simpson and they will both probably die, or save himself.

Without giving it away, this is a must see for anyone who loves mountain films, and frankly, for everyone else too.

Project Endless

Wong Ho-chung has established himself as the best mountain runner in Hong Kong and one of the best in the world.

His latest challenge, he ran 500km in five days. The aim was to start and finish between sunrise and sunset each day, and stick to the edge of Hong Kong at all times, following the region’s outline.

If you thought Hong Kong was just busy shopping malls and high buildings, this documentary will change your perception and have you adding Hong Kong to your mountain running bucket list.

It Is The People

“They say your first thru-hike is like your first love”, the film starts. This short but incredible film follows Elina Osborne as she hikes the Pacific Crest Trail, from Mexico to Canada.

There is no doubt hiking the Pacific Crest Trail is hard, but this film focuses on the relationships and kindness of people Osborne meets.

The heart warming and inspiring film reminds us that performance, records and first are not the only things you can get from the mountains – you can also create lasting friendships and have immersive experiences.

The Corris Round

The UK fell running scene, a precursor to trail running, is steeped in history. Across the country, there are ‘rounds’, which are often named after the first runner to complete the round.

The most famous is the Bob Graham Round. Runners were trying to complete rounds in record times long before the latest “Fastest Known Time/FKT” craze.

Inspired by Nicky Spink’s Bob Graham Round record, a young boy sets off to create his own round near his home in Wales.

The Corris Round film follows Tom’s journey during lockdown, bored of walks and searching for a bigger challenge. It is more than just a running film, as Tom learns about his home and his legendary neighbour.

It’s a lesson to all of us to make sure we do not miss what is under our nose.

Last Woman Standing

The Barkley Marathon is notorious for trail and ultra running. It holds a place in the community’s imagination as one of the hardest races on earth. Very few who attempt it finish it.

Last Woman Standing follows the inspiring story of breast cancer survivor Nicky Spinks, as she attempted to become the first-ever woman to complete The Barkley Marathon.

“Just give up now and decline this entry,” is the advice from the organiser.

Spinks does anything but decline and heads out on an epic adventure.
