SEA Games: Joseph Schooling wins gold in 100m butterfly in another Singapore one-two then another in relay

  • The swimmer pips Singapore teammate Quah Zheng Wen in a photo finish in the 100m butterfly final, both make Tokyo 2020
  • Olympic champion makes up for disappointing silver medal in 50m distance on Thursday

Singaporean swim star Joseph Schooling bounced back from his shock defeat in the Southeast Asian Games 50m butterfly final in the Philippines with victory in the 100m butterfly on Friday evening.

The Olympic champion powered through to finish first in 51.84 just ahead of teammate Quah Zheng Wen in second in 51.87. Both swimmers have now booked their place in the Tokyo Olympic Games next summer.

His time was good enough for regional gold but still a way off his Rio 2016 winning time of 50.39 when he beat Michael Phelps.

Schooling was beaten by teammate Tzen Wei Teong on Thursday in a sluggish 23.55 seconds, with the Olympic champion coming in second in 23.61. That was his first defeat at the SEA Games since 2013.

He was later a part of the 4x100m free relay team that took gold ahead of the hosts in second and Vietnam in third.

The Tokyo 2020 hopeful is expected to challenge for gold in the 100m freestyle on Sunday and Monday’s 4 x100m medley.
