UFC: Conor McGregor promises to ‘crack the puzzle’ and beat Floyd Mayweather after praise from Mike Tyson

  • Irishman thanks ‘Iron Mike’ for lauding his performance against Mayweather in 2017
  • ‘He went 10 rounds with the greatest fighter in the last hundred years of boxing, scoring punches,’ Tyson says

It’s getting quite hard to keep track of everybody Conor McGregor has called out on Twitter this week, but add Floyd Mayweather to the list again.

The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion took aim at anybody who’s anybody in the promotion’s 155-pounds division on Monday, in a series of foul-mouthed tweets.

Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier were all targeted, as the Irishman tries to stir the pot and figure out a comeback fight in what is becoming a crowded lightweight landscape.

But on Thursday he also signalled his intent to box Floyd Mayweather again, after receiving some high praise from the legendary Mike Tyson for his performance against “Money” in 2017.

“It’s a spectacle, but this is where it’s not a spectacle. Listen, he never really had a boxing match in his life, right? He went 10 rounds with the greatest fighter in the last hundred years of boxing,” Tyson said on his podcast.

“He went 10 rounds, scoring punches. Did he accomplish something? Look what he had to fight against. And look what he did when he fought against him.”

McGregor linked to the clip of Tyson discussing him and thanked him for his kind words, before sending a warning to Mayweather.

“Thank you Mike, and just know that for the inevitable rematch, with the knowledge I now hold of Floyd’s style, plus under the tutelage of my old school boxing coach, I will crack the puzzle, and I will beat Floyd,” McGregor tweeted.

“I promise my life on it. It is great to see you back Iron Mike,” he added, referencing the 53-year-old’s recent announcement that he intends to return to the ring.”
