Fanling Trophy: Terrence Ng holds off red hot amateur Kitty Tam’s blistering 63 for title and HKPGA Order of Merit honours

  • The 27-year-old pro shoots final round of 70 to earn a one-stroke victory over Kitty Tam and take home the Peter Tang Memorial Trophy
  • Tam shoots her best round at Fanling to seal second place in the 36-hole event ahead of Sam Maltby

Terrence Ng held his nerve superbly to secure a gutsy win from a fast-finishing Kitty Tam at the second edition of the Fanling Trophy at Hong Kong Golf Club on Thursday.

The 27-year-old professional, who shared the overnight lead with fellow pro Nathan Goulding at two under, fought back with three back-nine birdies after an indifferent start to card a level par-70 and a one-shot margin of victory.

Amateur player Tam, 25, meanwhile, fired the round of the tournament – a stunning 63 which included seven birdies and no dropped shots. Professional Sam Maltby placed third at one-over.

The 36-hole tournament, which included the top male and female players from the Hong Kong Professional Golfers’ Association (HKPGA) and the Hong Kong Golf Association (HKGA), was hosted by the Hong Kong Golf Club and featured a prize purse of HK$100,000.

“It’s always great to win,” said Ng, who turned pro after successfully making the cut as an amateur at the Hong Kong Open in January 2020. “I thought I had it going but it started to go the other way. Luckily I made some putts on the back nine and was able to get it done.”

In addition to picking up the winner’s prize of HK$20,000, Ng was also presented with the Hong Kong Golf Club – Peter Tang Memorial Trophy and another cheque for HK$30,000 for claiming the HKPGA Order of Merit for 2021.

“I’m very thankful to the Hong Kong Golf Club for hosting this tournament again. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s really important for both the Hong Kong professionals and the national team amateurs to play in multi-day competitive events to keep our games in shape,” added Ng, who hopes to earn some tournament starts on the Asian and China Tours respectively in 2022.

Despite finishing just one shot shy, Tam was delighted to end the event as the leading amateur.

“It feels great and I really didn’t expect it,” said Tam. “Everything went right – drives were good, approaches were good and I basically holed every putt. It’s my personal best performance at Fanling so there’s a lot to be happy about.”
