Tokyo Olympics: Hong Kong golfer Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching seals qualifying spot thanks to career-best LPGA Tour finish

  • The 27-year-old reaches her second consecutive Games in a season where she has made her first tournament top 10
  • Chan will compete in Texas before focusing on Tokyo, where Asia’s top women’s golfers will feature
Hong Kong star Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching has joined 60 women golfers in qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

It will be the 27-year-old’s second consecutive Games having competed in Rio 2016, where golf was reintroduced for the first time in more than a century. She finished 37th.

Chan was 48th in the International Golf Federation’s list of 60. The top 15 world-ranked players are all eligible for the Olympics, with a limit of four players from a given country. Beyond the top 15, players are then eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two from each country.

Chan, who is ranked number 218 in the world, has had her most successful pro season to date. The former University of Southern California and Daytona State College student earned her first top 10 LPGA Tour finish when she tied for eighth at the LA Open in April. It was also the third consecutive tournament where she made the cut.

Chan, the 2016 Hong Kong Ladies Open winner (as an amateur) and two-time Asian Games competitor, missed the cut at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship last week. She will compete in her final tournament at the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout in Texas from July 1-4.

The Olympics golf event is scheduled for August 4-7 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club in Kawagoe, Saitama prefecture.

Reigning Rio 2016 gold medallist Inbee Park (world No 3) will be returning alongside formidable South Korean compatriots Ko Jin-young (No 2), Kim Sei-young (No 4) and Kim Hyo-joo (No 6). Number 16-ranked Ryu So-yeon narrowly missed out.

China’s former world number one Feng Shanshan (No 19), who finished third in her last LPGA tournament in April, also qualified but said she will not compete in any event until the Olympics.
