We are back for Day 2, ladies and gentleman. The team event's first heat is well underway and the rings are alreadycausing problems for lots of athletes. Our man Patrick Blennerhassett is on the ground at the ACC in Shanghai. Stay tuned for Froning and his Mayhem Freedom team shortly as they look to build on Day 1.

Rich Froning just showed everyone why he is the greatest CrossFit athlete of all time as he helped his squad regain the lead via some epic snatches to will his team to a come from behind win in the first team competition of Day 2. Total beast mode.

The rain has started here in Shanghai which has chased everyone inside. Getting close to a full house now at Luwan Stadium. 


Taking cover

Quick refresher from Day 1: Brent Fikowski of Canada leads the men, Kristin Holte of Norway leads the women and Rich Froning's Mayhem Freedom from the US leads the team category. Also, Hong Kong's own Ant Haynes, declared China's "fittest man", sits in fourth and has become a local celebrity here in Shanghai. PB

CrossFit athlete Bobo, 38, has been doing CrossFit for five years, returning twice after giving birth. She hails from Guanghzhou and competes with Team Terracotta. Bobo said this is her first competition and has been blown away by the ACC. 
"The CrossFit community (here in Shanghai) is just amazing. I didn't know any of the boxes but I just showed up to train and they said 'Yeah, come on in.' So that was super cool."

There are definitely some rep issues going on right now with the judges. Multiple teams are starting to show their frustrations as The Worm proves tough for the competitors.

Mayhem Freedom were the only team to finish the second event in last heat. And, like a champion, Froning always has time for fan selfies. PB



Tough time 

Caroline Bao, 23, who just competed in the team event hails from Shanghai. She said Chinese people are swarming to CrossFit as the country is eager to find new fitness regimes. 
"CrossFit appeals to the youth really well here, there's a sense of community with it too that people like as well." PB

The rest of the day at Luwan Gymnasium is individual events. The men's third event runs until 12.43pm before the women tackle their third (12.43-2.36pm). Then the men are back for round four (2.36-4.18pm) and the women finish us off (4.18-5.27pm). JW

Liang Kong, who is CrossFit's country manager for China, keeping an eye on the men's event. The sound of dozens of rowing machines going at once is kind of cool, sounds like a light breeze going through what is a pretty muggy stadium. PB

Fikowski and Haynes (in white), check their machines before the final push for the men. There's a 30 minute time limit for biking, skiing and rowing machines in this event, another endurance test for sure. PB

Then it should go to Kristof Horvath and his bandana/yellow shorts combo. Horvath, who sits second after Day 1, was up on his bike pumping hard. He looks to be trying to build a lead on Fikowski right out of the gate. PB
 



If there's a prize for best dressed

The ACC has a new fan favourite. Doomak Lim of South Korea, who cut his hand last night accidentally and required stitches, refused to drop out and took on the rowing and skiing machine with one hand. The fans loved it, what a Rudy moment there. PB

While Brent Fikowski won the first event of Day 2 and remained atop the leader board, everyone is talking about Kristof Horvath. The towering Hungarian has seemingly come out of nowhere (his CrossFit page shows he's only competed in the Open) and he was neck and neck with Fikowski and only lost by a few seconds. PB

The Starbucks down the street from Luwan Gymnasium is seeing a boom in CrossFit athletes. Not sure Starbucks needs any more business but I'm sure they'll take it. PB
 



Kristof Horvath is the brother of Laura Horvath, who finished second at last year's CrossFit Games. Horvath trains with Froning and CrossFit Mayhem. PB



He ain't heavy

CrossFit commentator Brian Friend had this to say about Horvath in his pre-competition predictions: "Horvath was impressive in a deep men’s field at Strength in Depth. He finished 8th, but was hovering in the top three, and even held the overall lead at one point in the middle of that competition."  
Friend had him projected to finish fourth, maybe Horvath took it personally? PB


Predictions

Women's leader Kristin Holte is not messing around today. She's out of her seat on the bike to start event one. No mercy from the Norwegian who already has her ticket booked to the CrossFit Games and finished seventh last year at the big dance. PB

The team leaderboard has been updated and it is more proof of Mayhem Freedom's total dominance. JW​​​​​​​

Only two women finished the first event of Day 2. Kristin Holte, who won (of course), and Eik Gylfadottir, who hails from Iceland and currently sits in second. Iceland produces some of the best female CrossFit athletes in the world, and Eik showed why she is being touted as a CrossFit Games competitor who could build on her 26th place last year. PB

Our man on the ground might be our man on the couch. "As the only member of the outside media here (as far as I've been told), the media room appears to be all mine. As good a place as any for a food and coffee break," says Patrick Blennerhassett.

Top men

The rings proved difficult for the big Hungarian, who is repping national pride with his headgear -- that's a Hungarian flag, fact fans. It appears that muscle ups are not his strong suit. A few missed reps from judges. PB

Zeke Grove (pictured) from Australia just stole that event and Kristof Horvath finished dead last. Definitely off script to end day two for the men. PB

As expected at the end of the second day, it's Brent Fikowski who leads the way. The big stories behind him are an eventful day two for Hungary's Kristof Horvath, which leaves him in fourth (and exactly where CrossFit commentator Brian Friend predicted he will finish the ACC). Zeke Grove sneaks in the top ten after winning the punishing final event of the day. JW

No upset today says Holte. Eik Gylfadottir came out hard but all she gets in the end is a high-five from the leader, or maybe that's a low-five? Either way, CrossFit fans, that's it for day two, and we're back for one more day tomorrow, starting at 10am. Get some sleep, you'll need it. PB
