A woman in Southern China knelt before a traffic policeman on a busy pedestrian crossing begging him not to write her a ticket for jaywalking, when the cop suddenly dropped to one knee and begged the woman not to beg him, according to a state-run news portal.
Surveillance footage taken in the city of Putian, in Fujiian province, showed the woman crossing the busy road against a red traffic light, the news portal Fjsen.com reported.
The police officer stopped her and was about to book her for illegal jaywalking when she abruptly knelt in front of him, pleading: "This is the first time I have jaywalked. Can’t you just give me a warning?”
At that point, the cop knelt down to reason with her. But within minutes, the woman - perhaps realising that the begging approach wasn’t working - lay on the street for 10 minutes, surrounded by a growing crowd.
She offered different excuses, such as feeling dizzy, not to be moved from the road. The officer gave her a bottle of water, which she drank in one go, bit still she refused to sign the ticket.
Finally, when the officer was distracted to manage the traffic, the women disappeared into the crowd.
“She walked away really fast,” the officer told the reporter. “She certainly didn’t behave like the sick person who lay on the road in front of me.”
Chinese police take a dim view of jaywalking in a country where road injuries are the third leading cause of death, ahead of cancer, according to the medical journal The Lancet.
Offenders are placed on a blacklist, fingerprinted and made to sign a letter of guarantee not to reoffend.
