A 66-year-old container truck driver died on Wednesday on a Hong Kong flyover after he crashed his vehicle into a barrier and fell off the elevated road.

In a video posted online that captured the crash, the truck is seen slamming into the barrier on the left of the Kowloon-bound Tsuen Wan Road flyover. It then veers right and mounts the central divider before toppling onto its left side.

In the same footage, a taxi travelling in the New Territories-bound direction swerves sharply to avoid the truck.

According to police, the truck was travelling towards Kwai Chung at the time of the crash, at 12.04am.

“Upon approaching near Chai Wan Kok Cooked Food Market, the articulated vehicle reportedly lost control and rammed into the railings. The driver fell out from the vehicle,” police said.

Officers called to the accident site found the driver lying on Hoi Shing Road, below the flyover. He had suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Back on the flyover, the toppled container truck blocked the two-lane Kowloon-bound side of the road and disrupted traffic for about 10 hours.

The Transport Department said that section of the road was reopened to all traffic at around 10am.

Officers from the New Territories South traffic unit are investigating the accident and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact police at 3661 1346.

Official figures show 20 people were killed in 19 traffic accidents across the city in the first three months of this year. In the whole of last year, 96 people died in 96 fatal crashes.
