Beijing unleashes another attack on student Occupy activists
Hong Kong democracy activists have been accused by Beijing again of "colluding with external forces to mess up Hong Kong", and this time the targets of the attack appear to be two student leaders and Civic Party chairwoman Audrey Eu Yuet-mee.
Without naming names, state news agency Xinhua slammed the activists for testifying about Hong Kong electoral reform in front of the Canadian parliament this month.
"Organisers of the illegal 'Occupy Central' movement … went to the Canadian parliament's House of Commons to 'testify'," a Xinhua commentary said yesterday, apparently speaking of the Federation of Students' past and present secretaries general Alex Chow Yong-kang and Nathan Law Kwun-chung.
"The Civic Party's leading figure also took part through a video link," it added, in a reference to Eu. "They 'bad-mouthed' Hong Kong's political reform relentlessly … They vowed to object to the [government's] reform proposal, and they smeared human rights conditions in the city."
Eu told the she was only telling the truth.
"Hong Kong takes pride in being Asia's world city, and many countries are interested in its development," she said. "I [spoke to the parliament] in an open and transparent way … Whatever I said has been uploaded onto my Facebook and people can judge for themselves."
