Activist Ken Tsang gets five weeks in jail for assaulting police and resisting arrest during Occupy protest
Magistrate calls act of splashing foul-smelling liquid a great insult to innocent officers
Civic Party activist Ken Tsang Kin-chiu was jailed for five weeks by Kowloon City Court yesterday for assaulting police officers by splashing a foul-smelling liquid on them during an Occupy protest in October 2014.
But he was promptly freed on HK$300 cash bail pending his appeal within two weeks.
Principal magistrate Peter Law Tak-chuen sentenced Tsang, 40, to five weeks for one count of assaulting police and three weeks each for two counts of resisting arrest, all to be served concurrently.
The announcement was greeted by boos in the public gallery, which was packed with Tsang’s supporters.“Justice is dead,” they shouted.
Tsang, in contrast, showed no emotion. Outside court, he said: “Even though I am disappointed and sad about the judgment, I still respect the legal system in Hong Kong.”
The social worker said he would continue his fight “until the end”, thanking those who supported him for making him feel “strong and powerful”.
His sentence came ahead of another trial tomorrow at the District Court – this time of seven police officers accused of beating up Tsang that same night outside government headquarters on October 15.
