A female part-time taxi driver who allegedly wore a bulletproof vest and motorcycle helmet and kept a knife in her taxi on her day shift on Sunday was ordered by a court to stay off the roads while her case was processed.
Sum Siu-fong, 57, was charged with one count of possessing an offensive weapon, to which she entered no plea at Tuen Mun Court yesterday.
The prosecution dropped a second charge - that of possessing an imitation firearm in the form of a pistol-like airgun - just before the court session.
The prosecutor told the court that Sum reacted emotionally after she was arrested at Lung Mun Oasis residential estate on Lung Mun Road.
"She kept murmuring to herself and gave answers unrelated to the points raised during the investigation."
Sum's family claimed she had a history of psychiatric illness and had previously been admitted to Castle Peak Hospital in Tuen Mun, the court heard.
Magistrate Li Wai-chi adjourned the case to June 15, pending two psychiatric reports to assess whether Sum was fit to enter a plea.
The magistrate allowed the defendant to be released on HK$5,000 bail, but banned her from driving any kind of vehicle for the time being.
According to the charge, Sum was found in possession of an 18cm knife with a black handle in a taxi. She is accused of having it without lawful authority or reasonable excuse in a public place.
Her appearance raised the suspicions of a passer-by, who called police, news reports said.
Police sent five police cars and armed officers to intercept Sum's taxi in Tuen Mun.
